The day I got admission to University, was awesome for me, my parents, and grandfather. My parents and grandfather loved learning but did not get a chance to attend University; so I was nurtured to get there. Fast forward 3 years later, University was tough, the awesomeness and excitement were gone, I was depressed and questioned University learning, my parents decision making, and life.
Back to the book of Genesis. We saw in the lesson last week that the Bible was written to advance our relationship with God and not for scientific curiosity or laboratory experiments. In addition, the first part of the book of Genesis from chapters 1 to 11, were written to pass across the power, wisdom, and awesomeness of God. To the Israelites who had been led out of Egypt by Moses, and to the early Christians 2000 years ago, Genesis was exciting and built up their faith.
Fast forward to the world today, the awesomeness and excitement of Genesis has been lost to doubts, questions, and mockery. I was in that place too; for a long time I was troubled by the question who was Cain’s wife (Genesis 4:17).
Then I found Genesis 5:3-4 (NIV): “When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.” Adam had other sons (plural) and other daughters (plural)? How many, we don’t know; but legend has it that 250 years ago, Feodor and Valentina Vassilyev birthed 69 children; more recently Maria Benita Olivera in Argentina birthed her 32nd child in 1989.
Would we be able to answer all mysteries in Genesis? Yes, some will be answered in this life as we search, others in the next life, while mindful of Proverbs 25:2 (Contemporary English Version): “God is praised for being mysterious; rulers are praised for explaining mysteries.” God would not be God if he had no mysteries.
Lord, teach us humility and patience as we search, and wait, for answers to the mysteries you placed in Genesis, Amen!
